From June 14-16, the waters off Portorož came alive with the energy and skill of young sailors from around the globe during the official Warm-Up Regatta for the upcoming Optimist World Championship 2025. With 27 nations and 130 sailors taking part, the event offered a dynamic preview of what’s to come next week.
Day 1 – A Smooth Start
The regatta kicked off with ideal summer conditions. A steady seabreeze allowed for two solid races in the afternoon. Sailors settled into the rhythm of the bay, navigating clear skies, fair racing, and welcoming conditions – a perfect introduction to Portorož for those visiting for the first time.
Day 2 – Light and Tactical
The second day brought more challenging conditions. Light winds reaching up to 10 knots gradually eased throughout the day. Despite this, the race committee managed to complete three qualifying races, where sailors demonstrated impressive focus and tactical skills. These races decided the split into finals fleets for Day 3.
Day 3 – Fast Finals in a Bora Blow
Finals day delivered a dramatic change in weather, with a strong bora wind bringing gusts of over 20 knots. All three final races were completed in fast, planing conditions, offering thrilling sailing for competitors and a great spectacle for spectators. Sailors had a chance to truly test their boats, their technique, and their nerves in the powerful offshore breeze.
A Perfect Test for the Worlds
The Warm-Up Regatta achieved exactly what it set out to do: provide a realistic, high-quality test ahead of the Optimist World Championship. Over three days, competitors experienced a full range of conditions – from light and tactical to strong and exhilarating.
With the championship just around the corner, sailors and teams are now fully attuned to the challenges and beauty of Piran Bay.
